John Horner, host of Hold That Door, the new gay radio show on WUJC 88.7 FM, the John Carroll University radio station, asks our community to write to WUJC's management to show our support for the show, and to let them know there is an audience for gay broadcasting in the Cleveland area. Write to: David Reese, WUJC, 20700 North Park Boulevard, University Heights, Ohio 44118.
The Living End, a new film from writerdirector Gregg Araki was described in the November 9 edition of People magazine as an "HIV-positive Thelma and Louise." Donna Minkowitz, writing in her column in the Advocate, praised much of the film, but was rightfully concerned about the negative images of the only lesbians portrayed and walked out of the theater. It's time gay film makers stopped ignoring or belittling the lesbians of our community. Gay men should remember that lesbians are half of our community and fight side by side with men in the struggle for lesbian, gay and bisexual rights and the battle to end AIDS.
Matt, the gay regular character on Fox's Melrose Place played by Doug Savant, finally made an appearance in a feature role this month when he was bashed and subsequently lost his job when his boss found out he was gay. He has now filed a discrimination suit to get his job back. Keep an eye on this storyline as it develops, maybe there's a boyfriend in the wings. Melrose Place can be seen every Wednesday on Channel 19 at 9:00 p.m.
A couple of months ago, I reported that Rosanne Arnold was thinking of having her TV sister Jackie have a lesbian relationship this season. Well, Jackie doesn't, but openly bisexual actor/comedian Sandra Bernhard's continuing character, Nancy, on Fox's popular sitcom Rosanne did come out as a lesbian this month. The introduction of a new continuing gay character on the show is the result of the urging of Roseanne Arnold, who was reportedly upset at the loss of last season's gay character when Martin Mull left the show. Ms Bernhard's lover will be played by Morgan Fairchild. It has been reported that Roseanne Arnold is thinking of making a spinoff sitcom based on the lesbian couple. Show your support by writing to: Roseanne Arnold, co-executive producer, Roseanne, CarseyWerner Company, 4024 Radford Avenue, Studio City, Calif. 91604.
WVIZ Channel 25 program manager Bob Olive reports that the station has taped the November 6 satellite broadcast of the new, national gay variety show In the Life and will review it for broadcast on WVIZ. the November 6 premiere of In the Life, hosted by comedian Kate Clinton, will feature actor/comedian Lily Tomlin, Bewitched star Dick Sargent, and Garrett Glaser of Entertainment Tonight. Thanks if you have already called to ask for the show. It's not too late to show your support if you have not done so yet. Contact the station at 398-2800, or write to Olive at 4300 Brookpark Road, Cleveland, 44134.
The October 26 edition of People magazine reported that Kristy McNichol is on injured reserve from the NBC sitcom Empty Nest with a flare-up of her manic-depressive illness. The actress is reported to be recovering at home with her mother, brother and companion Martha Allen.
GLAAD, the Gay And Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, notes two more corporations who are not afraid to advertise in gay publications: Virgin Atlantic Airways and Benetton. Remember these names when you want to spend those gay dollars you worked so hard to earn.
You can make a difference, you know. Local community member John Suter, responding to a report from GLAAD that American Home Products was witholding advertising from shows with gay characters and gay story lines, wrote to the corporation to protest. American Home Products responded with a letter stating that they did not withdraw their sponsorship of One Life To Live when a gay storyline was introduced last summer. They said that they had met with GLAAD to clarify their advertising policy, and explained that they would continue to support programs with gay characters and themes.
Our special thanks to pop star Elton John who said at an awards presentation that he is a gay man and that his next video will be about men. He went on to indicate that proceeds from the new record, as well as the proceeds from future singles recordings, will be donated to support AIDS research and treatment.
Lesbian-Gay Community Center executive director Leigh Robertson was interviewed in "Why We Can't Get Along" a November Cleveland magazine article on intolerance in greater Cleveland. The November edition also features a cover story on our popular local singing group Odd Girl Out.
Finally, we hope that the new administration will signal a new era of positive inclusiveness in our portrayal in the media. Soon.
